led by God’s Spirit instead of following unsteady feelings of our heart

The speaker this week, Faith Dutton, talked about emotions and relationships. These three quotes sum it all up pretty well:

“The difficulty is to keep a tight reign on our emotions. They may remain, but it is not they who are to rule the action. They have no authority. A life lived in God is not lived on the plane of the feelings, but of the will. In scripture the heart is the will – the man himself, the spring of all action, the ruling power bestowed on him by his Creator, capable of choosing and acting.” – Elizabeth Elliot

"A woman of honor must posses a stable core. She feels emotion at great levels, but she is not a slave to her feelings. A woman of honor is of sound mind and does not fall apart emotionally, even in the gravest and most severe of circumstances." - Leslie Ludy

"Love is not a feeling. It’s an overmastering passion to cast ourselves down like a waterfall in happy giving, asking for nothing in return except for the joy of doing it. When we really begin to learn and practice that lesson we shall begin to feel at home in the eternal world of selfless love. It’s not some special feeling one waits for, nor some special person to evoke the love. It’s an attitude of will. I will cast myself down in giving. The lower I go, the more love I am able to transmit from God to others, just like the Lord of love Himself, who was not content until He found and took the lowest place in the universe." – Hannah Hurnard
