In the world, but not of it

I’ve struggled a lot with knowing what it really looks like to live in the world, but not be of the world. What does a set apart life really look like and how should I be interacting with the world? What is the balance of enjoying earthly things, but not making them idols? How can I affect the world but not be effected by it? How can I go back to public university after YWAM and learn art and psych from liberal teachers without buying into their propaganda and false values? The essence of sin is finding your value in anything outside of God. The world is a demonic system rooted in false values. There is so much worldly influence in day to day life and persuasion to follow the pursuits of the world that it is difficult not to get caught up in placing too much value on worldly things. It is good to enjoy things in the world if you don’t put false value on those things. If you have the chance for a good education, take it. If you can afford nice clothes, wear them. Enjoy nice things but don’t be seduced by them. I want to ask how far I can possibly go to love, honor, and serve my King, not how close to the line I can get without crossing it. The world has no authority to define me. As long as I find my value in God, understand His ways, make Him my magnificent obsession, and follow hard after Him, I will not be affected by the world and its false values because I will know truth. I am to go into the world, into the darkest places, to spread God’s light. It is my desire to change the false values found the world of art and psychology. I’m not supposed to hide away from the world, but go boldly into it, knowing my identity in Christ, so I can bring the Kingdom to earth.

“What is the secret to great living? Entire separation to Christ and devotion to Him.  Thus speaks every man and woman whose life has made more than a passing flicker in the spiritual realm.  It is the life that has no time for trifling that counts.”
-Amy Carmichael
