Walking the Tightrope

God is funny sometimes. He likes to speak to us all the time. Sometimes He speaks to us by giving us pictures like this one:

God is reaching out to us, asking us if we will come with Him on a grand adventure that will take us from the comfort of our balcony to who knows where! It could be walmart, it could be your neighbor’s house, it could be the local shopping mall, it could be some distant land like the Middle East, or some remote island. What God is looking for is our willingness to say “yes” to being His hands and feet, to stop for someone who is struggling and give them a word of encouragement. Are we willing to lay aside our busy schedule and heed the voice of the Spirit that beckons us to come away to listen to Him and follow?

The bottom-line question that God is asking His people through His Word is:
Do you trust Me?

There are those who sit on their balcony, enjoying the view of the city from afar, while sitting in the comfort of knowing their feet are on solid ground. There are those who “test the waters” by walking the railing beam, having a half-sense of security below them on one side, and the open city below them on the other side. Then there are the ones who dare to say “He can keep me from falling” and they journey across the tightrope, arms stretched wide, though they are no tightrope ninja by any means. They are the ones who can see the whole view of the city below them. They trust that if they fall, He will catch them, and they even have the guts to believe that He will keep them from falling.

God keeps pressing upon my heart the limitless importance of getting to know the nature and character of God, because if we do not know Him, how can we trust Him? How will we ever get the courage to walk the tightrope unless we know the God who makes provision for the impossible? Each book of the Bible shows us a clearer picture of who God is and why He is trustworthy. Each prayer we pray and each song we sing brings our knowledge from our head to our heart and brings us into closer fellowship with God, allowing us to apply the truth we study. Each small act of obedience prepares us for what is to come as we take a step forward onto the tightrope, as we take hold of that hand that is outstretched waiting for our “YES”.

“What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.”
