Suffering for Love

I was challenged this semester of SBS to ask myself how much discomfort I am willing to face for the sake of the Gospel. Those who follow Christ will face persecution and will go through trials.

“The way of love is never an easy way. If our hearts be set on walking in that way we must be prepared to suffer.” – Amy Carmichael

“For God called you to do good, even if it means suffering, just as Christ suffered for you. He is your example, and you must follow in His steps.” – 1 Peter 2:21

Everything Jesus did was good and right. The ultimate act of love cost Him the highest level of suffering. As a follower, friend, and imitator of Christ, do I expect and hope to evade suffering?
If so, I know nothing of Calvary love, for to suffer for Christ is the highest glory.

Triumphant are those who stand in the midst of storms and do not waver. They know His friendship and walk with Him through pain and gladness, in the valley of weeping and on mountaintops. They stand and proclaim, “watch what my God will do” amidst the most trying circumstances, and remain loyal to their Savior unto death. Upon Him they lean, ever dependent, ever ready to respond, longing for a glimpse of His beautiful face and treasuring His presence.

God gives us the grace and equips us with everything we need when we come before the throne of grace in time of need – we can therefore LEAP for joy and REJOICE in EVERY situation. Trials are an opportunity to glorify Christ by choosing to rejoice in Him even in the midst of suffering.

  1. Been learning about this too! When I think about the persecuted church around the globe, it makes me understand that most of the suffering for Christ that I have "thought" about has still remained conceptual. Don't know what suffering in this life I will endure for Him, and we don't seek it. But all the more continuing to pray for the persecuted Body - that the Lamb who was slain will receive the reward of His suffering that He is DUE.
